  Ultrasonic Testing at Lavender International

High frequency sound pulses are emitted from a transducer above a sample. The sound waves propagate through the sample, and reflect at interfaces. The reflected waves are monitored using a detector above the sample. The thickness of the sample, and the depth and type of flaw can be ascertained using this method. The method can be applied to most materials if sound transmission is good. Quick high sensitive results are obtained. The testing is carried out from one side of the sample only.

We can provide Ultrasonic Testing training suitable for PCN/EN473/ISO 9712 levels 1, 2, and 3, and ASNT Level 3. Alternatively we can provide training suitable for candidates working to a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A. Ultrasonic Testing is separated into three specific product sectors for certification purposes, Welds, Wrought Products (Forgings), and Castings.

Advanced Ultrasonics:

Lavender International is currently developing advanced ultrasonics techniques with our ultrasonics experts, in conjunction with several leading equipment manufacturers. In particular we offer training courses in Time of Flight Diffraction to SNT and PCN Levels 1, 2, and 3; and courses in Phased Array technology to SNT and PCN Levels 2 and 3. We are currently one of the very few training companies in the world offering such advanced ultrasonics training. Find out more about why you should choose Time of Flight Diffraction, Phased Array and learn about our research and development of Advanced Ultrasonics Techniques. A pre-requistite of these courses is an appropriate level 1 or level 2 UT certificate.

Supplementary Courses:

We also offer a PCN UT Supplementary Course, Critical Sizing. A prerequisite to Critical Sizing is UT Welds. Critical Sizing is available at both PCN levels 1 and 2.

As with all courses at Lavender International, the sylabus can be tailored to individual needs, and will depend upon which certification programme the training is aimed towards (e.g. SNT, PCN, NAS410).

Please note, there is a further charge if you require examination at the end of your training course, look at the examination page for details.

Ultrasonic Courses are available every week at the Penistone Training Centre. We can also provide onsite training for your NDT personnel on request. Please telephone the Lavender International office if you require help deciding which course you require.

  Recommended Reading List

The following list of books are recommended by Lavender International as appropriate learning resources to supplement visual inspection courses: (click on a book for more information and to buy online, numbers in brackets indicate the suitable level of training)

Ultrasonic Classroom Training Book (1,2)
Ultrasonic Programmed Instruction Book (1,2)
Ultrasonic Testing Student Training Pack (1,2)
Ultrasonic Question and Answer Book (1,2,3)
Ultrasonic Level 2 Study Guide (2)
Ultrasonic Testing of Materials (2,3)
Ultrasonic Testing Flaw Detection (2,3)
NDT Handbook 2nd Edition Ultrasonic Testing (3)
Ultrasonic Level 3 Study Guide (3)

In addition to these Ultrasonic specific books, we also recommend some general books which are useful for learning about product technology (the processes involved during the production of metallic components):

Product Technology PCN (2,3)

Materials and Processes for NDT (2,3)

PCN Minimum Training and Work Experience Requirements

Level 1
40 Hours Training
3 Month Work Experience
Level 2
80 Additional Hours Training
9 Additional Months Work Experience

Lavender International recommend a further 16 hours training for Level 1.

The minimum requirements for Level 2 are additional to requirements already satisfied for Level 1. If you are wishing to go direct to level 2, the minimum work experience is 12 months, and the minimum training is 120 hours. Note: The examination may be taken before the work experience is completed, however certificates are not issued until proof of work experience is provided. After passing the examination, a results notice is issued by PCN, you then have 12 months to complete the required work experience.

If you require training to comply with your employer's written practice, Lavender International will change the course to suit your company's procedure. For information about training for an employer based certification, please telephone the Lavender International office.
