Magnetic Particle Testing at Lavender International

Magnetic Particle Inspection involves the magnetisation of a component, followed by the application of ferromagnetic particles. The particles align along discontinuities in the surface, or shallow sub-surface discontinuities. This method is used to test welds, castings, and forgings for surface or subsurface defects, however it can only be used on ferromagnetic metals.

We can provide Magnetic Particle training suitable for PCN/EN473/ISO 9712 levels 1, 2, and 3, ASNT Level 3. Alternatively we can provide training suitable for candidates working to a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A.

Below is an example of a syllabus that is used for Magnetic Particle training courses (we can make changes to a syllabus to satisfy the requirements of a specific written practice if necessary):

Level 1:

General Theory:

- Principles of Magnetic Particle Inspection
- Methods of Magnetisation
- Inspection and Detection of Indications
- Checks and Calibrations
- Equipment
- Test Procedures
- Detectability of Defects
- Standards and Specifications
- Safety Precautions.

Specific Theory:

Application of the Method and use of Codes, Specifications and Procedures, applicable to the Company, including the relevant control checks.

Level 2:
In addition to Level 1:
General Theory:

- Testing Procedures
- Detectability of Defects
- Interpretation and Reporting
- Post Test Procedures
- Basic Production - Crude and Finished Products
- Basic Casting Production Methods - Finished Products
- Wrought Products Forming Processes
- Basic Welding Processes
- Safety Precautions

Specific Theory:

Application of the Method to the Specific requirements of the Company, in particular making reference to those Codes, Specifications and Procedures used by the Company, including the relevant control checks.

Please note, there is a further charge if you require examination at the end of your training course, look at the examination page for details.

Magnetic Particle Courses are available every week at the Penistone Training Centre. We can also provide onsite training for your NDT personnel on request. Please telephone the Lavender International office if you require help deciding which course you require.

  Recommended Reading List

The following list of books are recommended by Lavender International as appropriate learning resources to supplement Magnetic Particle inspection courses: (click on a book for more information and to buy online, numbers in brackets indicate the suitable level of training)

Magnetic Particle Classroom Training Book (1,2)
Magnetic Particle Programmed Instruction Book (1,2)
Magnetic Particle Question and Answer Book (1,2,3)
Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 2 Study Guide (2)
Magnetic Particle Inspection - A Practical Guide (2,3)
Principles of Magnetic Particle Inspection (2,3)
NDT Handbook 2nd Edition Magnetic Particle (3)
Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 3 Study Guide (3)

In addition to these Magnetic Particle specific books, we also recommend some general books which are useful for learning about product technology (the processes involved during the production of metallic components):

Product Technology PCN (2,3)
Basic Metallurgy for NDT (2,3)
Materials and Processes for NDT (2,3)

PCN Minimum Training and Work Experience Requirements

Level 1
16 Hours Training
1 Month Work Experienceb
Level 2
24 Additional Hours Training
3 Additional Months Work Experience

The minimum requirements for Level 2 are additional to requirements already satisfied for Level 1. If you are wishing to go direct to level 2, the minimum work experience is 4 months, and the minimum training is 40 hours. Note: The examination may be taken before the work experience is completed, however certificates are not issued until proof of work experience is provided. After passing the examination, a results notice is issued by PCN, you then have 12 months to complete the required work experience.

If you require training to comply with your employer's written practice, Lavender International will change the course to suit your company's procedure. For information about training for an employer based certification, please telephone the Lavender International office.
